“Go get it, Koko!” Deja commanded, sending the frisbee sailing through the air. Koko was all too excited to chase after the circular object. She caught it and promptly brought it back to Deja. At this point, the two of them were becoming inseparable. All I wanted was for Deja to heal from the trauma of being chased by a couple of rogue dogs. So far, I could see progress.

Footsteps crinkling downed leaves alerted me to someone approaching. Amell joined me while his detail fell back a few feet.

“Knew I’d find you here.”

“A simple call would’ve sufficed.”

“Not really.” Amell’s bespectacled eyes observed the park teeming with Steeles.

Occasionally, our church held dinner after church, which would either be in the fellowship hall or here at Sanders Park. Sanders Park had several eating areas, a designated area for kids to play on the jungle gym, and an area for those who wanted to dip their toes in the water. Situated along Crestview Woods Bay, this park was one my family had been coming to ever since I was a kid.

“You were right,” he said after a minute had passed. Neither one of us had to revisit the topic for why he was here.

“Of course, I was.”

He smirked.

“So?”

“It’s handled.”

I didn’t doubt him.

“I’m sure I don’t need to mention the necessity of every loose end being tied up.” Knowing the details wasn’t necessary.

“Absolutely not.” Amell ducked his head. “That’s you over there?”

His aim was Deja, whose gaze was on both of us.

Smirking, I asked, “What makes you think that?”

“‘Cause as any woman should, her fine ass is lookin’ at me like I better not be on no bullshit,” he explained.

We both shared a laugh.

“She’s a real one for being aware of who’s around her nigga. I like that shit.”

“Like somebody else, though,” I warned.

“This is exactly the reason I’m getting out of this shit. A nigga too old to be ‘round here wifeless and childless.”

Snorting, I agreed.

“Lemme go make my rounds so I can get outta here. Ahmad is landing this afternoon.”

Surprised, I said, “For good?”

He nodded. “He’s out for good.”

Amell walked off, headed straight for Deja. I mugged him when he turned and smirked at me while approaching her. That nigga was batshit crazy but knew not to cross any lines with me. Furthermore, I had Deja wrapped around my finger. Their exchange was brief and Amell was off again to speak to everyone else.

“You always stand on guard over your family as if anyone would fuck with y’all.”

I’d like to think I was surprised that Jali popped up here. In the past, she’d been to a few of these gatherings, not without me having to pull teeth to get her here. The fact that she was here without a soul asking her to be here immediately had me suspicious.

“What’re you doing here?” Deja’s eyes were back on me again. This time, they jumped questioningly between me and Jali.

“This is public property. I can come enjoy the scenery just like everyone else.”

“Which scenery are you here to observe?”

She chuckled.
